Building & water filters
title

Whether you are building a new house or renovating an existing one, it is worth taking note of your water lines and assessing the quality of your tap water. A lot of homeowners, property owners, and developers overlook the importance of checking water supply and plumbing.

The 6 reasons you need to include a water treatment system in your building or renovation plan

  1. A good plumbing plan that includes water filtration system reduces the need for multiple filtration units at home.
  2. Home or building renovation should include plumbing inspection and repairs or replacement. Old pipes have greater tendency to leak asbestos, lead, copper, and other metals into your drinking water.
  3. A well-built filtration system performs more efficiently.
  4. A whole-house water filter greatly reduces chances of mineral scale build up on inner surfaces of pipes.
  5. Properly fitted filters ensure your family is safe from common contaminants in tap water.
  6. Filtered water if good for your health, both inside and out ( Better skin, better digestions etc).

It's Your Choice

Home water filtration is both a personal choice and a safety option. Some people never installed water purification systems at home. Some do. It depends on the quality of your community water. The Australian government is quite strict in their guidelines for water quality. However, water taste and quality may vary from time to time. Some people install filters in their homes to improve the taste of their drinking water even though it's perfectly fine. More people invest in reliable treatment mechanisms for safety reasons.

Advice for Property Owners

Having your home built can be a daunting task, but one that's fulfilling at the end of the day. Everyone dreams of living in their own house. The challenge here is planning and funding. It takes a reliable builder to make sure everything goes according to your wishes. And it is expensive. Right from planning, you have to hire the right architect, electrician, plumber, and builder. Well, that's if you want your house to look good structurally and aesthetically and if you want your air-conditioning ductwork and electrical and water lines to be installed properly.

The location of your whole-house water treatment system or filtration units should be determined by your builder, plumber, and the water filter supplier. It should be done during planning and should be part of your home design. Proper planning of the setup location of your filters only guarantees the most efficient water filtration in your home.

Challenges When Renovating

House and building repairs and renovations present a whole new challenge for property owners. Old homes and fire- and flood-damaged homes require serious restoration, which may include plumbing repairs and replacement. Repairing or replacing old, leaky pipes is a difficult, tedious task. Good thing there are plumbers.

Unless you are a certified plumber or a highly skilled do-it-yourselfer, do not attempt to do the job on your own.

Restoration and renovation can be tricky. Most of the time people need to have either done but fail to notice the signs. Old homes may go untouched. Damaged gutters and leaking sewers or pipelines can go unnoticed for months until the problem becomes too obvious and the extent of damage has gone tremendous. The only way for you to decide whether or not you need to renovate or restore your house or a portion of it is to do an inspection.

During an inspection, a plumber can help you decide whether your pipes need replacement, but you can watch out for the signs before that.

  1. Your pipes are old. Pipes made of galvanised steel or cast iron last for 80 years, while PVC pipes last for around 30 years. Know what your pipes are made of and how long have they been around. Old homes, especially those built before the 80s, most likely used lead pipes. Replace lead pipes.
  2. Water pressure is lower than usual. At some point, you will notice water does not flow out of your taps as fast as usual even if you didn’t adjust the water meter. Ask your neighbour if they are experiencing the same low water pressure. If they are not, your old pipes may be clogged and thus need to be replaced.
  3. Water has been looking brown lately. Rusty iron pipes leach iron into your water supply, tinting it with brown tinge. Rust is not necessarily hazardous to health, but it gives water that bad metallic smell. Rust inside pipes favours accumulation of sediments and minerals that will soon clog your pipes.
  4. Water leaks. Sometimes you can quickly spot leaks. Sometimes you can’t. Look for damp areas at home. Leaky pipeline results in nastier home problem, mould. Repair or replace it right away.

Home restoration and plumbing repairs are perfect instances when you can have water filters installed. If you are replacing pipes, then it's the best time to call water filter installers to work with plumbers, as both can identify the best possible location for your in-house filtration system.

Why You Need Water Filters in Your Home?

Water filters are essential in keeping your family safe from natural and man-made contaminants in the drinking water. These unwanted impurities get into your tap water either through insufficient treatment methods done in plants or as a result of transit through old tunnels and pipes.

Only proper filtration gets rid of:
  • chlorine
  • fluoride
  • bacteria
  • viruses
  • parasites
  • sediments
  • heavy metals

There are different types of filters. Often the type of filter you need depends on the major contaminants in your water. Popular home water filtration methods are carbon filtration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet. Consumers usually prefer countertop filters, but other options include under sink, water tank, shower, and whole-house filters. It boils down to what will suit you best.
