Is Filtered Water The Same As Bottled Water?
Bottled water and filtered water can both help reduce the number of contaminants in drinking water, but which is better? Is filtered water the same as bottled water?
This article endeavours to explain what each option is so you can decide.
What is Filtered Water?
Filtered water is tap water that has been put through a mechanical filter or membrane to purify the water to remove many common tap water contaminants.
The filtration process removes chlorine, arsenic, heavy metals, pesticides, bacteria, viruses and even fluoride, depending on the water filter.
There are many different filtration methods that can be used to create filtered water.
What is Bottled Water?
Bottled water could be anything! We recently tested bottled water brands for pH levels and found they all had different results, some quite shocking!
Sometimes bottled water has been filtered or purified, and sometimes it hasn’t. It depends on where the water comes from.
If the water has come from the ground or a government treatment facility, it has undergone some level of filtration before being bottled.
If the water has come from a spring, it may have gone through a different treatment process where some minerals may remain in the water before being bottled, or it may not be filtered.
In some cases, bottled water brands simply bottle UNFILTERED tap water.
Is filtered water the same as bottled water? Not a chance!
It pays to do your research!
The Australian Drinking Water Guidelines specify that water "should contain no harmful concentrations of chemicals or pathogenic micro-organisms, and ideally, it should be aesthetically pleasing regarding appearance, taste and odour".
However, water can still contain nasty mysterious chemicals and contaminants even after council treatment.
Some of them are relatively harmless, and others can give you an infection or slowly chip away at your health over time.
Much of Australia's drinking water is chlorinated. Fluoride is also added to our water supply by the government, and there are longstanding discussions about the severe health risks associated with these additives.
You will find other articles in our learning centre which aim to address some of these concerning water issues.
